Community Event of the Year 2017: The Uraidla Show

Posted on October 18 2017

Community Event of the Year, Uraidla Show

On the 23rd January 2017, the Governor of South Australia named The Uraidla Show as the South Australian Community Event of the Year for 2017.

February 20th, 2016 saw the biggest Uraidla Show in a decade, with over 5,000 people through the gates of the show grounds, experiencing an event which pulled the whole community together. Reinvigorated by a young committee, fresh ideas were introduced to the 127 year old event, supported by a number of the older stalwarts of the committee who have led the committee over the longer term.

Uraidla Show President Damien Liebelt accepted the Award on behalf of the Committee. Read about Damien's experiences below;

Our last Uraidla & Summertown Country Show was a huge, fun day, and that was mostly thanks to all the facets of our community getting involved, with each group bringing their own strengths and enthusiasm. After such a rewarding event, it was amazing to then be named our local council’s Community Event of the Year! Even more exciting was receiving the call from our local council to head down to the city to attend the state awards.

Both at the South Australian of the Year presentations in Adelaide, and at the local council presentations in Stirling and Uraidla on Australia Day, our volunteers had a great time and formed many new relationships with incredible people from around the region and the state. A personal highlight of mine was to meet His Excellency Governor Hieu Van Le, and Young Citizen of the Year Sarah Hammond.

Our event is on November 5 this year, and we’re excited to make it bigger and better than ever! Since being named South Australia’s Community Event of the Year, the enthusiasm from our district has only grown. All aspects of the show, from the Sustainability Fair to the CFS apple juice stall, are all looking to bring in new levels of entertainment and participation. We welcome anyone from anywhere to what is sure to be a fun filled day!

Damien Liebelt
President
