Public Service Medal

The Public Service Medal is part of the national system of Australian Honours and Awards and is awarded twice-yearly by the Governor-General.

The award is announced on Australia Day (26 January) and the Queen’s Birthday (June) each year.

Campaign Periods

Nominations open on 1 November and close on 31 January (Queen's Birthday Honours)

Nominations open on 1 June and close on 9 August (Australia Day Honours)

The Medal is designed to recognise outstanding public service – whether through leadership, service excellence, improved productivity and efficiency, or innovation in program, project or policy development. All local, State and Commonwealth Government public sector employees can be nominated unless they are eligible for other comparable awards, such as the Australian Police Service Medal or the Australian Fire Service Medal.

Outstanding public service includes delivering work above and beyond the normal requirements of the position, a special achievement or success in the performance of duty in difficult or unusual circumstances or sustained high-level performance by an individual with a focus on outcomes and recognisable benefits to clients and the workplace.

Available to download are nomination forms, nomination guidelines and FAQ document for the Public Service Medal.
